  i agree with all your comments this pvr is terrible! I exchanged it for a new one, and it was the same rubbish. Do not buy!! FOR THE PRICE, this PVR is not that bad. True- the manual is translated badly, but anyone with a bit of nouse should be able to figure it out. True- It will not record or pass a signal when in standby and doesn't display show titles, but it does have a bigger storage capacity than other PVRs and shows can be archived onto a USB stick where they can be titled, unlike others. ALSO - You don't need to have it connected to the internet for EPG updates, unlike others, which you pay for download time. For the money it does all the basic things that you want a digital STB / PVR to do. A "smarter" PVR will cost you twice the price & have half the storage capacity. As one who earns a living writing technical manuals in clear English, I'm annoyed that JB HiFi would pass on a manual in pidgin English - although that's commonplace in Australia. I don't expect to spend a few hundred on something that has a manual that is so poorly translated from Chinese. I'm still trying to work our how to set up timer recording. Is this the same as 'Reserve recording through Timer'? If you import stuff from overseas, do a courtesy to your customers and spend a little on a decent translation. So its cheap and its Soniq so you expect a clunky interface but basically functional right? Wrong the clunky interface is just the start - once you work out how to operate it, which is not easily since the manual seems to have been translated from Finnish using into Swahili using Babelfish, and again into English, a sort of English anyway. Most disappointing is the damn thing won't record Shortland St on 72 which is the only reason I bought it - and is very hit and miss on otehr programs - every third or fourth recording is a "damaged file:" for no reason at all. Taking it back tomorrow. * Voice delay when just watching TV. * Unable to record anyway at all (via immediate record, EPG or manual). * Instruction Manual - is the worst english translation Ive come across. A lot of it doesnt make any sense. As everybody else has stated this is by far one of their WORST products, do not buy this at all, save your $ and save for something reliable like a Topfield, trust me, you won't regret it. I have tried every way I can find to tape my shows on this hardrive and nothing works. I now have to pay again for someone to come out and show me. Instruction booklet is hopeless. I hope things improve. Instruction book extremely obscure in meanings. Unable to name programs recorded. Unable to use timer to record in advance. Unable to record consecutive programs through EPG it recorded the same program twice. Long wait times for program schedule to appear on screen. Control buttons change function under different conditions. Update of firmware requires windows. Great data storage but it records programs as channel date and time rather than the title so its hard to find what you are looking for. A way around it is to record to USB and then rename thme on the computer then copy them back onto the PVR but its somewhat time consuming and not worth the effort. I wouldn't recommend this PVR. Other Soniq products are cheap but OK - however this is dysfunctional. No ability to name titles - no ability to program more than 6 days in advance - if you turn to stanby during a recording the recoding fails with no warning - can only view recording schedule channel by channel - if turned to standby tv antenna passthrough so cant watch tv - need I go on .... Do your resesarch and dont waste your money on an impulse like I did. I bought the 1TB Soniq PVR from JB. Safe to say I will never again buy a Soniq product! This device does not record programs through the EPG. I have downloaded the firmware upgrades and still no better! A complete waste of money... Next time I'm going elsewhere! I have purchased my first PVR in January and am disappointed to find that the file name of the recorded programs do not save as the shows Title. This PVR is 1TB so finding recorded programs after time will be quite hard to find. I will now need to keep a manual listing of everything I record, which is ridiculous. I would not recommend this product to anyone. No wonder this is so cheap! Buyer beware write a review
