Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perhaps the most fun (& awarded) Canon Macro lens I bought this lens about 3 years ago. It is, simply put, an amazing lens. I love the image stabilisation for hand-held macro shots, and it is extremely good at head & shoulders/heads only portraits. The IS makes this lens far easier to use, but know that small movements can make a big difference in the focus. (Like all macro). I'd always recommend you shoot with a tripod, and better yet, a focus rail. This is a professional grade (L series) lens, and it's built to take a beating. This does make it a little heavier, and it's much more expensive than the consumer models, but the image quality is excellent. Seriously, buying good lenses is more important than buying a good camera. Put your money into the glass, and leave money to upgrade your camera when the sensors are much better in a few years. The lenses aren't going to date that quickly, and if you want to sell one off, they retain their value more than cameras. I particularly like macro lenses which have a longer focal length, (100mm and above) because it gives me the ability to focus from further away, which means I'm not trying to squash any insect against the glass of my lens to focus. This increases the odds of getting the shot, and allowing for more natural lighting to work. In short, if I had to recommend one macro lens for Canon shooters, this would be it. There are others, but they aren't as forgiving, and some are vastly more technical to use.
