Rated 3 out of 5 by from Value for money GPS This is an easy to use GPS, with update-able maps, at a value for money price. Choice of voices, including Australian, and those spots for picnics that aren't on the map can be added to your Favourite Places for next time. Pros: maps are update-able for the life of the product, with add-on features (like traffic or radar warning) available at extra cost via TomTom's "My Drive" website, where you can also correct any map errors for other users. Cons: no lane guidance, apart from overlapping arrows showing the number of lanes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product Since purchasing I have found the Tom Tom Start 52 really easy to use. Installation via the website was just as easy and very comprehensive. I have tried the Tom Tom out and it works beautifully, especially the advanced warning for turns and the easily understood directions. A great product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Slow and poor data Bought this rather than hire one for two months visit (I am Australian living overseas). The most frustrating thing is entering the destination - it demands a street name and you can't simply set a small town as a destination. Even when you have a street name it is not listed. Navigation to points of interest near a named distant town is not possible. The device is slow and I often found that the direction to turn came too late. This is especially the case where there is a complex road junction to navigate when even driving slowly does not work. I was told by JB Hi Fi that I could switch to European maps during update. I now notice the JB Hi Fi are specifically nominating Australia NZ and Asian maps. This suggests that this will not be possible. Having said all that it works for basic navigation and was cheaper than renting one from a car hire company for my visit.Bought in Perth CBD.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A massive disappointment I bought this about a month ago to replace a TomTom XXL540. The 540 still works but the windscreen mount no longer works and TomTom have stopped doing updates for it. I loved the 540 so was expecting a similar experience from the Start 52 (as they were both about the same price new). Unfortunately, I hate the Start. So much so I nearly threw it out the window of my car one day. So what do I hate about it? - It's slow to start up from fully off (much slower than the 540). - You can't add a location to My Places unless it's in the GPS's database. Since my 10 year old house isn't in TomTom's database, I can't add my home to My Places. - There's no quick way to cancel a route if you decide not to complete the programmed route, so you're continually harassed to turn around. - When searching for a destination, the on-screen keyboard takes up more than half the screen and you can only see one and a half of the suggested destinations in the list. - You can't charge the GPS without it turning itself on as soon as you plug it into a USB charger. Really annoying considering its battery only lasts for 1 hour. - I used to like to leave the 540's windscreen mount on the windscreen. It was much quicker to do this than attach the windscreen mount every time I wanted to use the GPS. I can't do this with the Start 52 as you can't easily detach the GPS from the windscreen mount while the mount is attached to the windscreen. - The power cord attaches at the back instead of at the bottom (like the 540), making it impossible to connect power to the unit without taking it off the windscreen. - As mentioned in other reviews here, the screen isn't very bright and can be hard to read in bright light. It's nowhere near as bright as the 540's screen. There are many more things I hate about it, so I'm going to find a way to mount the old XXL540 and I'll go back to using that instead, even though it never had lifetime maps (map updates stopped over 2 years ago for me) and TomTom are no longer updating the software. Then I'll consider buying a different brand of GPS.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad for a basic unit Bought this as my old TomTom was so far out of date and it was cheaper to buy a new unit with lifetime maps that update the old one. Has fewer functions than the OneXL but does the job I need
