At last, a love story for everyone!

Based on the much loved and hugely successful memoir and stage play of the same name, HOLDING THE MAN is the warm, funny and extraordinarily moving story of the 15 year long love affair between Timothy Conigrave and the boy he fell in love with at high school, John Caleo. Tim was an aspiring actor. John, the captain of the school football team. Their relationship blossomed and endured in the face of everything life threw at it – pride, adversity, discrimination, temptation and loss - until the only problem that love couldn’t solve, tried to destroy them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great film. This is a fairly decent transfer to the screen of Timothy Conigrave's book of the same title. A "warts and all" depiction of homosexual love in the 70's in Australia. Back when it was considered safer to keep one's sexuality secret. Brought back many painful memories for myself also growing up in the 70's. These two guys were such brave young men and plenty of tears were shed as I watched the ultimately sad ending. Brilliantly acted by the two leading men. Thoroughly recommend this film.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful, poignant, funny, and heartbreaking A fantastic movie that had me bawling. A beautiful tale of growing up gay in Australia through the 70s and 80s, Holding The Man was still on my mind days after the waterfall of tears stopped flowing from my eyes. The movie does have its flaws, including some wooden acting from supporting cast members, and questionable work in the hair & makeup department. The stellar cast includes some of Australia's top acting talent, but the big name actors are under-utilised and relegated to very small roles akin to cameo appearances. In a way though, this works in the movie's favour. It's like the production team are showing us that yes, that's Guy Pearce and Anthony LaPaglia, but the story of Tim and John is so important that even the big names take a back seat to let it get told. Ryan Corr as Tim Conigrave is awe-inspiring, as he delivers a performance that shows his dedication and devotion to the role and the story. His masterful acting carries the film from the start right through to the end, where his perfect portrayal leaves you stunned, amazed, and sobbing like a baby as the credits roll. I highly recommend this movie.
