Rated 5 out of 5 by from Welcome return to the 1970' sports era... There is something about the 1970's which is difficult to define. Before the greedy, self obsessed 1980s, there was something pure yet beguiling about this earlier decade; before computers, the internet, before mobile phones, before emails (when people actually use to write letters to each other, and before technology took over the world; the 1970s was "the forgotten decade". When sport was played for the "enjoyment of the game", rather than the quick accumulation of wealth and greed and improper practices. The delightful Emma Stone (La La Land, The Favourite) plays Billie Jean King, a rising tennis player whilst Steve Carell (Vice) plays the media journalist, hot on her tail to get the story of the scoop of the year. This is a delightful return to a decade when hair was long, clothing was way too busy, music was trendy and sport was played for the enjoyment of the competition; rather than the pursuit of greed and money, which is our legacy of the 1980s. Not a great film but an over-due return to a simpler and more sincere time. Watch it and enjoy the memories of growing up in the 1970s.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great performances in another sporting biopic Two of the best actors in today’s Hollywood bring this battle of the sexes/sexist Neanderthals to life. Emma Stone, fresh from her La La Land Oscar is great as Billie Jean King, and Steve Carroll almost outdoes his performance in Foxcatcher as the pushy publicity-seeking Bobby Riggs. If you enjoyed I, Tonya, give this a viewing.
