Never give up. Never give in.

A thrilling and inspiring true story begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oldman's finest performance to date... For many years, Gary Oldman has been delivering superb performances in a variety of film genres, hinting that he is a very capable, dynamic and versatile actor. Consider: "Sid & Nancy", "Air force One", "Bram Stoker's Dracula", "JFK" among many others. Now in his career defining role, Oldman brings such tenacity, detail and clarity to Churchill in "Darkest Hour", he displays with conviction that he has the acting gravitas to encompass this most complex and nuanced role. Great also to see Ben Mendelson in this production. The film is complex, yet superb, potent and grips you like a vice. As you watch "Darkest Hour", you will not be able to look away. You may even forget to breathe as you immerse yourself in the characters. Exemplary.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another Churchill movie Another Churchill movie but this time focusing on just his first few weeks as PM in 1940. You don't get a much better drama scenario than this ever and, coupled with Churchill's most historic & emotional language, it's very watchable. Still I have to say, for me, I didn't really like the performance of Gary Oldman. I thought he played up too much the man buckling under enormous pressure rather than the bulldog charging through. From this distance, without enormous research of personal papers, we're not likely to know which is more accurate.
