Description

Stunningly restored, the classic 1980 horror starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau, Tommy Atkins and Janet Leigh, THE FOG is a tense and ghoulish tale that confirmed John Carpenter as a master of terror.

Antonio Bay, California has turned a hundred years old and is getting ready to celebrate it's centennial year. As the residents of the small, quiant harbour town begin to celebrate, an eerie fog envelopes the shore and from it's midst emerge dripping, demonic spectres, victims of a century old shipwreck... seeking revenge.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quite A Bad Transfer This is a very poor transfer, as the other review states, the picture quality it bad, though some scenes are nice, clean and sharp, most is just bad, darker scenes have there awful compression artifacts on the top and bottom of the frame resulting in jarring flickering, a lot of the fog shots and bright spots on the frame have macro-blocking, making it look as if it was being streamed over a poor internet, the HDR is poorly graded and the colors overall are dull, like I’m watching the film with sunglasses. I’d stick the the Shout blu-ray, this is an unacceptable transfer, I do hope they can correct it in the future.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Two stars for the transfer, not the movie. I'm a huge John Carpenter fan. Halloween will always be my all time favourite. The Fog comes a close second. I own two editions of The Fog on blu ray. The first was the bare bones now discontinued editon that Studio Canal bought out and I own the wonderful Shout! Factory edition from a few years back. The Shout! edition had a ton of extras (which you can find on this edition now) and the transfer of the film was given a new edition with the supervision of Director of Photography, Dean Cundey. So I was excited to know that The Fog was given the 4K treatment and it was day one for me. Now, keep in mind that The Fog was shot with just over a million dollar budget and a lot of the scenes are somewhat dark. However, I am very disappointed that the 4K transfer is problematic. The transfer is darker than the Shout! release and colours come to life in bright lit scenes (during the day) and in some instances, the radio station from the lighthouse. Grain is also dominant in some night scenes, especially when The Fog attacks the ship. Personally, the film is great. There is no doubt about it but if you happen to own the Shout! factory edition, stick with that one... or at least until this 4K mess comes down in price.
