Some people change your life forever

In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, CAROL follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York.

As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light.

Carol is directed by Todd Haynes and written by Phyllis Nagy with moving performances from Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson, Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Cory Michael Smith.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Carol DVD Depends on the type of person you are, but if you love superb acting (Blanchette and Mara) and can let yourself just absorb the atmosphere of a movie and don't need everything explained to you verbally, you will love it. Romantic and sumptuous, something you take in by osmosis rather than being inundated with something dramatic happening all the time. Have watched it 3 times and will watch it again and have discovered something new on each viewing. Next time, however, I will make sure I buy the full movie version, as 5 minutes were cut from the dvd version (very annoying). Not for everyone, but for the right audience, it is sublime.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compelling "love story"... Cate Blanchett ("Blue Jasmine"), Rooney Mara ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo") and Kyle Chandler star in this intoxicating film romance, "Carol" from Todd Haynes ("Far from Heaven"). Nominated for an impressive 6 Academy Awards, the film tells the delicate yet controversial love story that forms between the older married Blanchett and the younger delicate and less experienced Mara. The film is gorgeous to admire and the characters ring true; even as they embark on this controversial love story. Beautiful film, even if somewhat controversial.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Carol Review Carol is an intoxicating Oscar nominated film that I recommend for all avid movie goers. Both lead characters (Therese Belivet played by Rooney Mara and Carol Aird played by Cate Blanchett) have astounding character developments throughout the film. The authenticity of the characters is groundbreaking and the representation of what love truly is, is the closet I've seen in modern day film. This will remain as an example of what "film" truly is, from the cinematography to the cast it holds its own compared to other greats before its time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from simply intoxicating Divinely presented super presentation, the acting was so beautifully understated, this was not just a movie it was an experience in the wonder of love, risk taking, sublimely and so beautifully touching, fraught with inner tension but while sweeping its audience away with its beauty, truth, and so captivating at every turn, enough suspence with a hint of danger while the two find themselves unexpectly in love.
