Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Slice-of-life Family Comedy King of the Hill is a criminally underrated slice-of-life satirical comedy about the lives of the Hill family and their family, friends and neighbours in the heart of the fictional town of Arlen, Texas. Drier than its contemporaries (it originally aired alongside The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy and American Dad on FOX in the U.S.), the series takes enough liberties of its animated format without succumbing to excessively cartoonish tomfoolery that live action programmes are so often guilty of doing. The series is purely character driven, allowing the idiosyncrasies of the various personalities drive the otherwise mundane storylines, and once the nuances of the characters "click", you'll find the series to be so much funnier and endearing as it presses on. I remember upon my first viewing of the series that I had laughed until I cried by the time I had reached the fifth episode. Of course, most viewers won't have a similar reaction as my sense of humour is drier than most, but King of the Hill is certainly deserving of your attention, if nothing else but as an alternative to the more in-your-face, "laugh at our jokes!"-style humour that is so pervasive in Hollywood nowadays. If you enjoy character-driven stories that are grounded in reality (looking at you high-school anime fans!), then I'm confident that you will love King of the Hill.
