Season 4 of Packed to the Rafters traces the family's fortunes as they attempt to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of Melissa's death. Strong family bonds ensure that traumatised Ben (HUGH SHERIDAN) receives warm support as he takes his first steps back into the work-force. Slowly he learns to smile again, embracing a newfound interest in gardening and a growing friendship with his boss's daughter Emma (ZOE CRAMOND) which might hold promise of something more. And there are further love issues in the Karandonis household, with Carbo (GEORGE HOUVARDAS) and Retta (HANNAH MARSHALL) choosing to elope rather than face the comic extravagance of a Karandonis wedding. Julie (REBECCA GIBNEY) and Dave (ERIK THOMSON) meanwhile are forced to deal with the consequences for Rachel (JESSICA MARAIS) and Jake (JAMES STEWART) of a dangerous accusation flung at him by a drunken woman he encounters on a rugby weekend away. Rachel's feelings for Jake are tested to the limit, especially when her boss throws into the confusing mix the chance of a lifetime to work in New York. Julie and Dave also wrestle with the unexpected arrival in their lives of new family members, not the least being the release from prison of Dave's father, Tom (JOHN HOWARD). Tom's never quite predictable manipulations ultimately force Dave to take a heart-breaking stand, and cause him to initially misjudge the intentions of his half-brother, larrikin pub musician Matt (JACOB ALLAN). Julie meanwhile finds a new best friend in Donna (MERRIDY EASTMAN), though their initial exchanges are hilariously unpromising. Meanwhile Nathan (ANGUS McLAREN) is searching for a new direction in life and his desire to travel forces Julie and Dave to undertake some soul-searching of their own. And Ted (MICHAEL CATON) is also keen to find a greater purpose, mentoring a troubled twelve year old boy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Follows on from Season 3's tragic events In this season we get to see each character's personal reaction to the depressing events of Season 3. Ben has the worst reaction of all, starting a terrible ongoing battle with depression that is painful for any viewer to witness, especially when they've connected with the character over three long seasons.
