Description

One of the greatest heroes in America history never fired a bullet.

HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun.

He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic he single-handedly rescued the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was injured by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour, which is the highest military honour in the US, awarded for personal acts of valour above and beyond the call of duty.

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Somewhat disappointing... Mel Gibson is generally an excellent director: Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto, The Man Without A Face. And he has proven that he can tackle war themes extremely well. So what happened to "Hacksaw Ridge"? Based on the true tale of a Christian soldier Desmond Doss, who would rather read his Bible than bear arms, Andrew Garfield (Silence) is unusually unconvincing as Private Doss. Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers) goes over the top as the platoon captain - his scenes reminding me of the opening of "Full Metal Jacket". Yet the casting of Australian actors Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Sam Worthington are more distracting than involving. This is a powerful film raising strong ethical, moral and religious questions; yet the whole thing tends to fall a muted flat.
