Description

CLIMAX depicts the unhinged madness that takes over a dance troupe's party after a punchbowl of sangria is spiked with LSD. Beneath strobing lights and pounding music each dancer's psyche begins to crumble, and creeping paranoia gives rise to a hallucinatory nightmare.

Legendary art-house provocateur Gaspar Noé (Love, Enter the Void) delivers an intensely deranged and lurid orgy of sex, drugs, and club music (featuring Cerrone, Daft Punk and Aphex Twin); taking us into the forbidden reaches of heaven and descending deep into hell.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inventive, surreal, exhausting, and outstanding. Though one could say this is his most accessible film to date, the latest cinematic assault from writer/director Gaspar Noe (I Stand Alone, Irreversible, Enter The Void) will still challenge and unsettle many viewers, but it is without a doubt one of the most immersive, visually astounding experiences of 2018. Sofia Boutella, whose body of work is spotty at best (The Mummy, The Kingsman : The Secret Service, Hotel Artemis) gives undoubtably the performance of her career, but everyone delivers fully committed turns. The dancing is incredible (an early sequence done in one take is jaw-dropping), and the music brilliantly adds to the atmosphere. The gravity defying cinematography by Noe regular Benoit Debie (and shot the current The Sisters Brothers) is extraordinary, reminding one of the classic imagery seen in Dario Argento’s best work. Being a Gaspar Noe film, you know things will become nasty, so there is a slight feeling of the inexorable as the premise plays out, but that doesn’t mean you will know what this insanely talented film-maker will throw at you. Climax is a vibrant-yet-confronting mix of sight and sound, making it somewhat of a disappointment that it is not getting a blu-ray release in Australia. Whatever the format, this is unforgettable viewing.
