Gotye is the music-making mantle of Wally De Backer, songwriter, producer and all-round one-man band. A few years ago he created an album that became something of an underground classic. That record, Like Drawing Blood, was voted Triple J listeners' favourite album of 2006, and iTunes UK's Album Of The Year in 2008. In 2007 Gotye won the ARIA Award as Australia's Best Male. Artist and his audiovisually ambitious tour with a mini orchestra attracted huge crowds and critical raves.
Somebody That I Used To Know is the new single from ARIA Award-winning songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Gotye. Featuring vocals from lauded newcomer Kimbra, it's the second taste of Gotye's album, Making Mirrors, the highly anticipated follow-up to his platinum-selling classic, Like Drawing Blood which recently polled #11 Triple J’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums Of All Time.
The mid July release of Somebody That I Used To Know (featuring Kimbra) came a few days earlier than planned owing to a leak of the video online. Within a week the song had been shared online over 50,000 times and it is currently sitting at #8 on the iTunes single chart.
Earlier this year, the first single Eyes Wide Open came in at #25 in Triple J's Hottest 100 only weeks after its release. Since then Gotye has delivered memorable live performances on the Laneway and Groovin' The Moo festivals. He will be giving fans another preview of Making Mirrors when he performs at Splendour In The Grass later this month.
On August 20 the new album will be performed by a new 10-piece incarnation of his mini-orchestra and brought to life visually by some of Australia's most talented animators at the Sydney Opera House by invitation of the prestigious Graphic Festival. Making Mirrors is out August 19 in Australia via Eleven: a music company.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gotye's best album Gotye succeeds in making a truly great album after three tries. This album is exceedingly well made, stunning in it's breadth and depth of subjects and genres, from the joyous "I Feel Better" to the devastating "Eyes Wide Open" and "Bronte". When the massively popular "Somebody That I Used To Know" is only the fifth best song on the album, you can be confident you are dealing with a special album. It is worth spending extra for the bonus edition's extra tracks.
