Description

The Classic 100 – ABC Classic FM's annual survey of listener favourites – returns with a celebration of the musical instrument with which we are all born: the human voice.

When ABC Classic FM asked listeners across Australia to nominate their favourite vocal music, they were quick to respond, eager to share their musical treasures. At number one was Beethoven's triumphant Choral Symphony, featuring the 'Ode to Joy', closely followed by Bizet's opera The Pearl Fishers, with its famous duet 'Au fond du temple saint', and in third place Handel's beloved oratorio Messiah.

Despite not featuring in the top 5, JS Bach and Mozart were the most popular composers, each with 8 works in the top 100. Around one third of the works chosen were operas; a quarter were composed in the 20th century; and three Australian composers – Ross Edwards, Elena Kats-Chernin and Nigel Westlake – were voted in.

This album presents the results of The Classic 100: Voice survey, containing highlights from all 100 of Australia's best-loved vocal works: the grand oratorios of Bach, Handel and Haydn, passionate opera arias by Puccini, Verdi and Wagner, the sparkling wit of Gilbert and Sullivan, contemporary classics by John Rutter, Elena Kats-Chernin and Karl Jenkins, and the timeless beauty of Arvo Pärt and Hildegard of Bingen.

Composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music for singers – whether it's the drama of the opera stage or the delights of operetta, the sublime beauty of great choral music or the intimate intensity of classical song.

Singing is as old as human society. We lift our voices to celebrate and remember, to pour out our deepest emotions and to make our spirits soar, to tell one another stories and to make ourselves laugh. Long before music was written down, we sang to one another to pass on legends and traditions, and to express love and praise.

In the Middle Ages, song was a vital part of religious and secular life. From the Renaissance, vocal music evolved from simple chants to more complex music, often with instrumental accompaniment. Over time, music written for the voice has become central to the classical tradition.
