Kasey Chambers, one of Australia's most loved female artists, has teamed up with Shane Nicholson to record a new album, Rattlin' Bones. Drawing on both their songwriting talents and unique voices, Rattlin' Bones heralds a return to the alternative country roots that first launched Kasey's stellar career, whilst establishing their own unique sound. This is Chambers and Nicholson at the top of their form to make an extraordinary "roots country" record - writing and performing heartfelt songs that speak with an undeniable honesty. Whilst giving a sizeable nod to Chambers country music upbringings, Rattlin' Bones equally secures Nicholson's natural fit on the rootsy highway. Produced by Nash Chambers and Shane, Rattlin' Bones is their first album collaboration, although fans of the pair will already be familiar with the powerful rapport between the two artists from live performances and various previous recordings. Having sold over one million albums, been awarded seven ARIA's, five CMAA Golden Guitars and a swag of APRA Awards, Kasey Chambers is undoubtedly one of Australia's most loved and respected female performers. Kasey's balance of commercial success with her credible country roots has accorded her the admiration of her fellow musicians - her supporters including notables such as Emmylou Harris, Elton John and Ben Harper to name a few. Shane Nicholson started his music career as the front man for Brisbane-based rock outfit Pretty Violet Stain and his subsequent solo work includes the albums It's A Movie and Faith and Science., which have received critical success in both Australia and the US. Frequently praised for the quality of his writing and production in his past work, these same talents indisputably resonate throughout Rattlin' Bones. Rattlin' Bones sees two of Australia's finest singer songwriters unite for 14 tracks that straddle the gamut of emotions and are sure to delight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happier Times Have been guilty of ignoring Kasey Chambers as a solo artist believing she was closer to pop than country, but this record is living proof that she can cut it with the best that country music has to offer. Along with her then-husband, Shane Nicholson, there are fourteen tracks here that lay testament to a musical match that blends age-old ideas with a contemporary flavour all of its own. From the opening title track the mood is quickly established with the kind of imagery that is often found in roots music but is blended to perfection here - life and death and the eternal search for meaning whether it be by spiritual or other avenues. And this is a very spiritual offering from the outset - mostly old testament musings that leave the listener in no doubt as to the sincerity of the lyrics whether they be looking for light in life's dark corners or celebrating the simple things that are often overlooked in time's travels. If I had to pick a favourite track from the album I would nominate the second song, 'Once in a While' - a gentle piece that draws the listener in to the nuances of a typical coupling where the emphasis is squarely on one's wish to bring happiness to the other with some kind of fluency. To the ear, the eventual breakdown of the relationship between Chambers and Nicholson could not have been predicted with any certainty based on this recording, but there is a document here that brings love in its varied guises regardless of whether it ultimately failed or not. And it is at this point that I am reminded of a well-tried saying that seems to ring true despite its recurrent usage. That being - 'better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all'. A cliche perhaps, but we may never have discovered this beautiful pairing without cupid and his dead-eye arrow and for that I owe a debt of gratitude unlike very many others I know. A truly original piece of craftsmanship that deserves to be considered among the top shelf of releases from this country, if not the world, of its generation and for others to come. I know I'll be listening for as long as precious light shines upon my living room - not such a 'sweet waste of time' as is sung with perfect clarity here. Heavenly, it seems.
