AFL - Premiers 2019 Richmond Tigers
As the final siren sounded on the 2019 Toyota AFL Grand Final, Tigers fans could once again celebrate a famous victory with Damien Hardwick’s men repeating their Premiership success for a second time in just three years.
After the jubilation of 2017, the Tigers of 2018 were devastated to fall at the Preliminary Finals with a loss against bitter rivals Collingwood. Heading into the 2019 season Richmond was determined to make amends. Utilising the quick handballs, relentless pressure and the ability to counterattack at breakneck speed that are now the Tigers’ trademarks, Richmond possess a roster packed with talent; built on a defensive base of Nick Vlastuin alongside All-Australians Bachar Houli and Dylan Grimes, midfielders Dion Prestia, captain Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin support a fearsome attack featuring veteran forward Jack Riewoldt and new recruit Tom Lynch. Despite indifferent early form the Tigers finished the home-and-away season with nine straight victories to seize third spot on the ladder – only missing out on the Minor Premiership on points percentage – and headed into the Finals period full of confidence. Facing the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba, the experienced Tigers overcame their upstart opponents with Martin kicking six as the club won their first-ever finals match outside Victoria and secured a week’s rest. Facing the Geelong Cats at the MCG, the Tigers again proved too powerful for their opponents, clinching victory to book a Grand Final berth against GWS GIANTS. And on a famous afternoon, riding the momentum of an incredible season, the Tigers surged to victory to deliver a historic AFL Grand Final triumph that will be
celebrated by the club and its fans for years to come.
