Design For Living

Design for Living is unique, a recording project 20 years in the making – which means there's been time to collect up some of Australia's finest musicians along the way. It's the culmination of a decades-long songwriting and recording partnership between Peter Dasent and Tony Backhouse, aka Blessed Relief.
Their collaboration began in New Zealand's emerging rock/pop scene in the 1970s and has continued on both sides of the Tasman ever since.
Given Peter and Tony's legacy it is fitting that the title track of the album Design For Living was recorded in New Zealand, way back in 1987, featuring the legendary NZ musician Bruno Lawrence and a very young Jonathan Zwartz on bass.
In recent years, Peter and Tony's careers could not have taken more different paths: Peter is known for his pianistic skills, for directing his virtuoso chamber jazz instrumental ensemble, the Umbrellas, and for his children's music; Tony, on the other hand, has largely avoided instruments to become a pioneer in a cappella gospel choirmastery in Australia and New Zealand. In BLESSED RELIEF, they find common ground in popular music with funny chords and uncommon structures, sardonic lyrics and great rhythm sections.
