It was a time of prohibition and segregation. A product of the great migration. From hundreds of thousands of African Americans migrating north and then being subjected to unfairly high rent, came the tradition of the rent party.
Faced with two problems, where to go on a given night and how to pay the rent, lubricated with bootleg liquor these underground house parties solved both.
They also provided a source of steady income for blues and jazz musicians who were hired to draw in and entertain paying revellers with the remaining proceeds keeping the landlord at bay.
Whisky & Gin is a tale of such.
