Fall, The - Series 1-3
In her first lead role in an investigative series since The X Files, Gillian Anderson brings the same intelligence and depth of character to her portrayal of Stella Gibson, a successful, highly driven homicide detective. Jamie Dornan stars as Paul Spector, the ruthless serial predator she seeks.
While chillingly hiding behind the façade of loving husband and father, Spector – who is revealed from the outset – is preying on women in and around Belfast. While the police are stalled in their investigation of these as yet unconnected murders, Gibson is drafted in to conduct a 28-day review on secondment from London’s Metropolitan Police. Almost immediately, Gibson determines these heinous crimes are all linked to the same person. An outsider, she immediately feels a certain level of hostility from the local detectives – but Gibson understands the psychology of serial killers – and how to find them. Under her lead, the team, including Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) as pathologist Reed Smith, explores the case from every angle, uncovering an intricate web of lives entangled by the murders – including members of both the killers’ and the victims’ families. Revealing how a modern, top level murder investigation team works when it comes up against every policeman’s worst nightmare, this rich and complex thriller is less of a “whodunit” and more of a cat-and-mouse game. Gaining in intensity as the drama unfolds, this is a hunt that will challenge the investigative skills of Gibson and her team to the limit as they race to catch Spector – before he succeeds in killing his next victim.
Following Series 1’s gripping cliff-hanger, Gillian Anderson returns as Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson , on the trail of serial murderer Paul Spector played by Jamie Dornan. Set again in Belfast, Northern Ireland the second series is written and directed by Emmy® Award winning Allan Cubitt. Despite Gibson and Spector never actually meeting on screen in series 1, the electric chemistry between the two characters and their escalating rivalry became the lynchpin of the series and left the audience crying out for more. With Gibson still in pursuit of Spector, a personal link from Spector’s past opens up some clues for Gibson but provokes Spector in a way that threatens to jeopardise the whole investigation. Gibson is forced to take ever greater risks and the closer she comes to capturing him, the more Spector trespasses into her private world, delighting in taunting and provoking her. As the net gradually tightens around him he becomes psychologically ever more dangerous and destructive.
At the climax of the last series, audiences were left reeling as Spector, critically injured in a devastating ambush, lay bleeding in the arms of Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson. Moments before, the intense and single-minded investigator thought she had her man; now, shocked and desperate, she's losing him. Bringing a killer to book is going to take much more now than simply catching him. In the emotionally charged aftermath of the shooting, Gibson's personal journey to exact justice for the victims' families must begin with the blood-soaked fight to keep Spector alive. As THE FALL reaches its inexorable conclusion, it's clear that the rules of this deadly game of cat and mouse are set to shift once again.
