NRL - Premiers Collection: St. George Illawarra Dragons
Not yet reviewed.
The St.George Illawarra Dragons – a club steeped in history – have witnessed some of the greatest players in Rugby League pull on their famous “Red V” jumper. A proud heartland club representing both the districts of St.George and Illawarra, the Dragons have won 16 first grade Premierships since their establishment in 1921.
After a period of dominance in the immediate post-war era, it would not be until the late 1970s that the Dragons would return to the pinnacle of Australian Rugby League. A Dragons side mentored by former Saints player Harry Bath would be the surprise packet of that era – affectionately dubbed “Bath’s Babes” for their youthful exuberance, and featuring the likes of Steve Edge, Rod Reddy and Steve Morris. Nearly 66,000 fans packed the SCG to witness the Dragons draw with Minor Premiers Parramatta Eels in a bruising 1977 decider, and then blitz them in the Grand Final replay a week later. Further success followed for Bath’s men in 1979, but as that decade closed the Dragons faithful would have to wait 31 years for another Premiership – finishing as runners-up on five occasions before Dean Young, Mark Gasnier, Jason Nightingale and Ben Hornby inspired coach Wayne Bennett’s team to a drought-breaking triumph over the Roosters in 2010.
This special edition St.George Illawarra Dragons: The Premiers Collection limited release set contains all three Dragons’ Premiership Grand Finals since 1977, including both the Grand Final and replay from that year, presented in their original broadcast format – a must-have for the true Saints fan!
