'Tangerine Reef' is an audiovisual album by Animal Collective in collaboration with Coral Morphologic to commemorate the 2018 International Year of the Reef.

Like the seminal 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi scored by Philip Glass, Tangerine Reef  will serve as a visual tone poem. But instead of time-lapses of cities, landscapes, and people, the film component of Tangerine Reef will consist of time-lapse and slow pans across surreal aquascapes of naturally fluorescent coral and cameos by alien-like reef creatures. Tangerine Reef is the sight and sound of a literal underwater collective of animals.

Coral Morphologic was formed by marine biologist Colin Foord and musician Jared McKay in 2007 in Miami. Pioneers of avant garde coral macro-videography, Coral Morphologic has previously filmed for the Nat Geo Channel and the BBC Natural History Unit, as well as shot the cover of Vice Magazine and was featured in their 2015 documentary 'Coral City.'

Coral Morphologic has had a long working relationship with Animal Collective, starting in 2011 with Geologist's soundtracking of their short film 'Man O War', and has continued through two dive trips; one doomed by Hurricane Irene in the Turks and Caicos and the second to the United States' northernmost coral reef, the Flower Garden Banks.

In February 2017 the Borscht Film Festival presented Coral Orgy a collaborative site-specific performance by Animal Collective and Coral Morphologic 'celebrating the cosmic synchronicity of sex on the reef' in the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center on Miami Beach. The success of this performance led to the ultimate studio recording of Tangerine Reef.

Animal Collective walks the walk when it comes to ocean conservation, having previously done projects supporting marine protection areas and shark conservation. Geologist (Brian Weitz) has a masters degree in environmental policy from Columbia University with a focus on the marine environment. As an undergraduate, he spent a semester working at the infamous Biosphere 2 Center in Arizona, assisting on some of the first CO2 acidification studies on coral growth inside its captive 'ocean'.

Following his masters degree, he had a marine policy fellowship with the US Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Fisheries, and Coast Guard. Deakin (Josh Dibb) is also a passionate scuba diver who has dived throughout the globe. He and Weitz have taken at least one scuba trip together every year since 2005 and have directly witnessed the destruction of the world's coral reefs by bleaching events, fishing trawlers, and dynamite fishing.
