Rated 4 out of 5 by from Powerhouse acting on display! "12 Years a Slave", which won 3 Academy Awards tells a true story of Solomon Northup, a talented and peaceful African American who is forced and sold into slavery in the deep south of America. Powerful acting by Ejiofor, Fassbender, Dano, Giamatti and young Lupita N'yongo (who won the Oscar for her performance) ensure this film does not fall into caricature and captures the cruelty of these unfortunate times in US history. Carefully directed by Mc'Queen " 12 Years" tells a moving tale of slavery, racism and escape. At times, cruel and callous, this is a film that should not be missed. Brad Pitt who produced the film is excellent in a minor role. Very good production

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful and Relevant '12 Years a Slave' follows the harrowing true-life story of man of colour, Solomon Northup. Born a free man in 1800s in northern America, Northup was kidnapped and sent to the American South where he was forced into slavery on a cotton plantation. He languished here for 12 years before being released. Northup experienced and witnessed the horrors of this brutal time in history. This quality production is powerful and gripping: a timely reminder too to be mindful of global social-justice issues. I found this film purchased efficiently though JbHi both thoroughly engaging and extremely useful as context for teaching senior school students.
