On Sunday November 14, 1965 at 10.48am, Lt. Col. Hal Moore and his regiment of 400 men touch down at Landing Zone X-ray in the Ia Drang Valley, a place in Vietnam know as "The Valley of Death". They find themselves surrounded by roughly 2 000 North Vietnamese soldiers and the ensuing battle becomes one of the most savage in US history. Heroism, bravery, sacrifice, the butchery of battle, We Were Soldiers is a gruelling exploration of war with all its horrors, that can rightly take its place alongside war classics Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan and Platoon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from How many war movies will Gibson star in? Mel Gibson ("Braveheart", "The Passion of the Christ", "Hacksaw Ridge") stars in this Vietnam war conflict, set in the 1960s. Whilst war films have become a familiar staple; "We Were Soldiers" is enlivened by a cast that includes Madeleine Stowe ("The Last of the Mohicans"), Barry Pepper ("True Grit"), Sam Elliott among others; and portrays the conflict from the perspective of the families left behind, the media, the church and the US political system. In this regard, the film is mostly successful. It is unlike most war films that forensically examine men at war with themselves ("Platoon"); as it deftly examines the doubt, demons and dilemmas US soldiers must face on a regular basis. "We Were Soldiers" is gritty, complex and multi-faceted. Brilliant and brave examination of a conflict.
