Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mortal Engines bluray release If you read the book before seeing the film version of "Mortal Engines", then you may not find the film totally enjoyable. I kept making comparisons between the two, wondering why some situations, events or characters had been changed, left out, invented or given a different spin. But putting this quibble aside, the film version was a lot more enjoyable than I was anticipating, based on a few lukewarn reviews. The special effects are outstanding, and made the concept of moving tractor cities seem believable, if quirky. One character, Shrike, was very effectively realised (better than in the book), but the main character, Hester, who is severely disfigured in the book, just has a little scar on her cheek in the film which totally negates the way people perceive and react to her. The music score was suitably dramatic or rousing, and the various costumes, city designs and effects indicated there were a lot of talented people pitching in to make this movie a quality experience. Congrats to director Christian Rivers, a protege of Peter Jackson, for tackling such an ambitious project, even if the final product watered down some of the more interesting and dramatic elements of the book, or made the characters either good or bad without the book's subtle shading.
